ChatGPT Ads have their own creative limits, and they are tighter than Meta's or Google's. The title is recommended at 16 to 24 characters. The copy line is recommended at 32 to 48. If you paste in Facebook copy, you will be over.
Blog posts about these limits disagree with each other. Some say 24 characters, some say 50. Both numbers are real: one is OpenAI's recommendation and the other is the hard maximum. This page gives both, taken from OpenAI's own help center and checked on 26 September 2026.
The ChatGPT Ads specs, in one table
| Field | Recommended | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Ad title | 16-24 characters | 50 characters |
| Ad copy | 32-48 characters | 100 characters |
| Image | Square, PNG or JPG | 1200 x 1200 pixels |

In OpenAI's words, an ad "includes your brand name, logo, title, copy, landing page, and image". You write two things: the title and the copy. The image you supply. Brand name and logo come from your advertiser account.
That makes the unit much smaller than a Facebook ad. There is no primary text block and no "See more". The title and one short line of copy carry the whole message.
The image rules that fail uploads
The image field has more rules than the pixel size:
- Square. Not 4:5 and not 1.91:1. Crop a square version before you upload.
- 1200 x 1200 maximum. A standard 1080 x 1080 social square is inside the limit.
- PNG or JPG. Convert WebP and HEIC files first.
- A direct, public URL. OpenAI says the link must "open directly to the image in a browser". If it needs a sign-in, redirects to a preview page, blocks crawlers, or is blocked by a firewall or CDN rule, validation or review may fail. Google Drive, S3/CloudFront and your own domain are all listed as supported.
That last rule catches a lot of stores. If your CDN or security plugin blocks unknown bots, OpenAI's crawlers get blocked too. OpenAI also asks that your landing pages don't block OAI-AdsBot or OAI-SearchBot.
How OpenAI says to write the creative
OpenAI's "Create Ads for ChatGPT Ads" guide asks for something most ad platforms don't: volume and variety.
- Build for coverage. OpenAI asks for "multiple title/copy variations per offering", because more variations give the system more conversations your ad can match.
- Keep each variation distinct. Each title and description for the same offering "should introduce a different angle rather than repeating the same message".
- Informative beats catchy. OpenAI's advice is to "prioritize clear, useful details over broad marketing language".
- The copy should add something. Don't repeat the title. Use the copy line for a fact the title didn't have room for.
- Keep the image simple and matched to the title and copy.
This is a different job from writing one clever headline. For one product you need several short titles, each with a different angle, all inside 24 characters.
A worked example
Here is one offering, a made-up small-batch coffee roaster, written four ways. Each version takes a different angle, and every character count is exact.
| Angle | Title (chars) | Copy (chars) |
|---|---|---|
| Freshness | Roasted the Day It Ships (24) | Every bag is stamped with its roast date. (41) |
| Taste | Chocolate, Not Bitter (21) | Medium roast, tasting notes printed on the bag. (47) |
| Convenience | Beans on Your Schedule (22) | Delivery every 2, 3 or 4 weeks. Pause anytime. (46) |
| Price | Coffee From $14 a Bag (21) | Free shipping on two bags or more, no code. (43) |
Every title is between 16 and 24 characters and every copy line is between 32 and 48. Each copy line adds a fact the title doesn't have. None of the titles uses a superlative like "best coffee ever": OpenAI's policies reject misleading ads, and a vague claim teaches the system nothing about when to show the ad.
Shopify stores: feed ads vs. ads you write
If you sell on Shopify, OpenAI has two kinds of campaign, and only one needs you to write anything.
- Product-feed campaigns. The ChatGPT Ads app for Shopify syncs your catalog, and product ads are built from it: product image, title, price and ratings. You don't write creative for these.
- Standard campaigns. Brand ads, collection ads and offer ads use the title, copy and image described above, and you write them yourself. OpenAI's "Suggested ad drafts" feature pre-fills a draft from your website's metadata, but OpenAI says it "does not generate new copy or imagery with AI". The creative is still your job.
Treat a suggested draft as a starting point. Your meta description was written for Google's snippet, not for a 24-character title.
A quick checklist before you upload
- Every title is 24 characters or less, and none is over 50.
- Every copy line is 48 characters or less, and none is over 100.
- You have several variations per offering, and each has a different angle.
- The copy adds information that isn't in the title.
- The image is square, PNG or JPG, 1200 x 1200 or smaller.
- The image URL opens straight to the file in a private browser window, with no redirect or sign-in.
- Your landing page doesn't block OAI-AdsBot or OAI-SearchBot.
- Your UTM parameters are on the destination URL, so the traffic shows up in your analytics.
FAQ
What is the character limit for a ChatGPT ad title?
The maximum is 50 characters. OpenAI recommends 16 to 24, so aim for that range and treat 50 as the point where the upload fails.
What is the character limit for ChatGPT ad copy?
The maximum is 100 characters. OpenAI recommends 32 to 48. Use the copy for a fact that isn't in the title.
What image size do ChatGPT Ads use?
A square PNG or JPG, no larger than 1200 x 1200 pixels. It must sit at a public URL that opens straight to the image. A 1080 x 1080 square is within the limit.
Does ChatGPT Ads write the ad for me?
No. The "Suggested ad drafts" feature pre-fills a title, description and image from your website's metadata, but OpenAI says it does not generate new copy or imagery with AI. Shopify product-feed ads are built from your catalog, not written.
How many ad variations should I make?
OpenAI doesn't give a number. It does say to make multiple title and copy variations for each offering, each with a different angle, because more variety gives the system more places to show your ad.
